In 1974, a group of artists and artisans from Eugene, Oregon, traveled north to Portland to establish the Portland Saturday Market. Since then, it has been the prime spot in town for locals and tourists alike to find hand made crafts and fine art, buying them directly from the artist. Today the Portland Saturday Market (open on Sundays, too) is the largest and longest running market of its kind in the country and when you go you’ll see why it’s still a major Portland attraction.

Tips: Portland Saturday Market is a great place to find gifts for friends and family. Make sure to bring cash with you to pay the artists directly. You won’t need to eat before you go, because the international food court is packed with home-made food. Plan to spend a few hours, there are plenty of things to see and do. Remember to bring your parking ticket to have it validated at the information booth - two hours free parking for $25 dollars spent at the market.

What to Bring: The kids! You’ll keep them entertained with balloon artists, games, face painting, and free childrens’ activities on the first Sunday of every month. Grab the camera for snapshots of balloon hats or painted faces. Remember, it’s Portland and much of the market is outside, so pack an extra layer of clothing just in case.

Hours:
Saturdays 10am-5pm
Sundays 11am-4:30pm
Open every weekend from March through December 24th.

Getting there: Portland Saturday Market is located under the Burnside Bridge, between SW Naito Parkway and SW 1st Ave. The easiest way by car is to park in Old Town/China Town and walk toward the Burnside Bridge, where staircases down to the market will be marked “Portland Saturday Market.” You can also take the Max train to the Skidmore Fountain stop in Fairless Square. You’ll get off right in the market.

Come on - Saturday Market is a Portland staple. If you have never been - GO! If you are hosting company from out of town, this should be a first stop. The market is alive, always fresh, and a sparkling example of what makes Portland such a wonderful city. Fabulous for browsing, a place to find unique hand-made items, a great local for a quick lunch, fun music and performers, and a great time to reconnect with some urban funk in a safe and colorful setting. Oh, and did I mention a VERY entertaining place to sit and watch people? A trip to Portland is not complete without a stop here.

I always want to go! It’s the greatest thing to do on a weekend morning. Don’t eat until you get there and then choose something yummy from the vendors. If you have guests and need something “for everybody” this is it! If it’s just you and your Sweetie it’s the perfect place to wander around holding hands. Like to people watch? This is your place. It’s a Portland icon for sure.
